Asmara — Eritrea is registering encouraging achievements in reducing the infant mortality rate.
This was disclosed in a meeting held in Asmara in which representatives of health experts from all the administrative regions and the Ministry of Health took part.
In the meeting, the participants held discussions on preparations for the 2nd round national Vitamin "A" distribution program scheduled to take place next November.
Speaking on the occasion, the head of family and community health branch office, Dr. Zemuy Alemu, indicated that Vitamin "A" distribution is gaining momentum thanks to effective campaigns and preparations. He noted that infant mortality rate has been reduced by 5% over the past 10 years as a result of the coordinated endeavors exerted.
Also speaking at the meeting, the representatives of UNICEF and WHO said that Eritrea's achievement in reducing the infant mortality rate is remarkable compared to other Sub-Saharan countries, and as such it represents an exemplary model.
