Bujumbura

People living in the northern part of the capital city of Bujumbura are outraged by a lack of electricity after one of the dispatching cabins failed last Friday and the state-owned water and electricity company, REGIDESO, has not fixed it after a week.

This blackout has been particularly problematic in the slums of northern Bujumbura such as Kamenge, Cibitoke, Kinama and Buterere where dairies and other small businesses which require electricity provide work for most of the population.

REGIDESO recently raised the prices of the two indispensable sources of energy. REGIDESO decided to increase the prices of water and electricity, but later held back from following through on price increases due to the protest which compelled even the head of state to get involved.

At that time, REGIDESO, the only company dealing in water and electricity, was seeking to increase the salaries of its workers.

The government of Burundi largely depends on tax revenues and its domestic resources after donors refused to disburse promised funds following a chaotic management of the country's assets and a bad record in governance.

The economic loss occasioned by this power failure might have a great impact since Burundi now has nothing to trade to strengthen its failing finances.
