Botswana: Armed Robberies On the Increase

26 October 2007

Gaborone — The Botswana Police have warned members of the public to tighten security in their homes and business in view of the increasing number of armed robbery cases.

Statistics indicate that a total of 47 armed robbery cases were recorded during the past week throughout the country, fifteen of which were home invasions. Eleven suspects have been arrested for eight of the cases.

The Southern Central Division recorded 35 cases, followed by the North and Southern Divisions recording six cases each.

In one of the incidents, Police in Goodhope are investigating a case in which a man aged 23 years was robbed of cash amounting to over P5,000 by an unknown man armed with a hand gun. The victim was attacked at night while he was at his home.

In a similar incident, Maunatlala Police are investigating a case in which a 38 year old woman was robbed of a Toyota Hiace, a shot gun, ammunition and clothing by two unknown men armed with a pick axe at Mokokwana village last Friday.

Since the beginning of the year, a total of 1,541 armed robbery cases have been reported compared to 1,586 reported during the same period last year.

The Botswana Police would therefore, like to urge the public to put in place measures that would ensure the security of their homes and businesses at all times. These measures include installing security alarms, watch dogs, employing security guards and locking their premises.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on 188 motorists and 13 of them were charged for driving under the influence of alcohol. Meanwhile, a total of 33 motorists were charged for using hand held mobile phones whilst driving.
