Nigeria: Muhammad Promises New Dawn for Public Relations

In a bid to transform Public Relations and restore the integrity of the profession, a fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, and a Member of Council of the Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM, Yusuf Abdullah Muhammad, has promised to ensure new dawn for Public Relations practitioners and assist the body in resolving all crises that have militated against the profession if elected President of NIPR.

Speaking to newsmen over the weekend in Abuja, Muhammad unveiled a 15-point agenda, which includes, among others, provision of modern information communication technology facility for communication with members and other professional groups around the world; review of the NIPR Act; creation of modern library/resource centre for comprehensive services for research, learning and professional development and enhance professionalism in Public Relations where members will be proud of being members.

Muhammad who said he was encouraged to contest for the presidency of NIPR because he believe strongly that he was in the best position to explore areas that would encourage the development of the profession and create a conducive environment for the profession of Public Relations to thrive.

Muhammad who is presently director of five media and Public Relations related outfits in the country boasts of several performance profiles in PR. Apart from being the Chairman of the planning committee of the NIPR Annual National Conference AGM, Abuja 2000, he is presently the Coordinator General of Public Relations Leadership Group; a position he assumed in 2005.

A graduate of HND (Finance and Accounting) in 1989 from the Kaduna Polytechnic, Muhammad once served as Public Relations, Manager Shukrah Printers and Finetex Ltd. Kaduna. He is at present the Public Relations Advicer to Arewa House, Centre for Research & History Documentation, Kaduna.

The PR practitioner is a widely traveled person and has been involved in several courses, both at home and abroad. He attended a workshop on "Transformational Leadership, RIPA International-London; he was also in Israel from 2nd to 10th November 2006 to attend a workshop on small and medium high-tech enterprises and R & D based start-ups.

In Nigeria, he is a regular speaker in many seminars. He has presented papers at NIPR Kaduna chapter on "Managing Budgets for Public Relations Programme in 1995. Apart from attending management and Public Relations course in Abuja organised by BEEC in 1998, Muhammad was the chairman at Pan-African Conference on Traditional Communication Media & Development that was organised by ACCE in 1999 at Abuja.

Abdullah who hopes to emerge victorious at the NIPR Annual Public Relations Conference and AGM in Lafia, capital of Nasarawa state slated to hold from 7th-10th November 2007. Born in 1958, Muhammad is married with eight children.
