Botswana: Galo Health and Fitness Expo

30 October 2007

Francistown — As a way of encouraging healthy living among Francistowners, Galo Shopping Mall held a health and fitness expo and turned a visit to the shops into an experience that could change and even save your life.

As a reward for shopping at the Mall, customers were given the chance to take time out from their shopping to consult the many health personnel who were offering their services free of charge. Though this was the first time Galo had held the event, they were so pleased with the response that they have promised to make it an annual occasion.

To make the day noteworthy Galo invited professionals with a range of skills, including BOTUSA, Medrescue and the Francistown City Council Fire Department. Medical expertise and advice was not only limited to the human condition as Bhatanani Veterinary Clinic and Veterinary Vetmed were also on hand for consultation on all things that crawled or went on four legs.

Speaking at the event Galo Promotions Officer Fikile Nzula said they were motivated into hosting the expo as a social responsibility to the Francistown community to promote health awareness. As a way of reaching large audiences the day was held at the end of the month peak shopping time. "The day was hosted to support and encourage Francistown residents to lead healthier lifestyles by providing them with access to information on healthy eating and active living," Nzula remarked.

Besides having their blood pressure, sugar levels and oral health checked, various activities were held to keep shoppers entertained during their shopping break, and ensure a bumper crowd enjoyed and benefited from the day.

The Francistown City Council Fire Department put on a fire drill display to show how they did things when it came to putting out fires caused by fuel and oil related products.

Fleximind Health and Fitness Studio showed residents how they could keep fit by showcasing aerobics and bodybuilding.

The exhibition that had ladies screaming their heads off for more, and scrawny men looking down at their shoes, was the muscle display of well toned hunks from the studio.

After wrapping up the day's activities Nzula said they were delighted and excited by the number of people who turned up for the occasion. The promised that next year's event would be even bigger and better.

"We are committed to helping Francistowners make a healthy change in their lives. We encourage people to address health concerns, including the protection and promotion of good health and prevention of disease, and we want people to make health-related decisions and live healthily," Nzula explained.
