Primary school teachers returned to work after a strike that lasted one week. Three trade unions participated in this strike that paralyzed public primary schools. These teachers were demanding the implementation of promises that the government made five years ago. The strike was only suspended for one month in order to give the government time to implement these promises.

Primary schools teachers demand bonuses for double vocation, fidelity allowances and a teachers' housing fund. They agreed to return to school after their trade unions called upon them to do so after a meeting on Saturday 27 October 2007. Several administrations have promised to implement these demands after the civil servants' salary adjustment is brought into effect.

In the meantime, the trade union of the personnel of the ministry of justice (excluding magistrates) indicates that there have been important breakthroughs towards finding a solution to their problems after their meeting with the first Vice-President of the Republic, Dr. Martin Nduwimana.

The government of Burundi has managed to end the numerous strikes that have hit the country during the month of August. Even nurses who warned that they might start to go on strike on 30 October indicate that the health ministry has started promising to enter into talks with them
