Eritrea: Afabet-Nacfa Road Renovated

Asmara — The 52 km-long road running from Ashorm to Egri Sigad along the Afabet-Nacfa route, which was damaged due to heavy rains, has now been renovated by the RODDAB Construction Company.

The Administrator of the Nacfa sub-zone, Mr. Idris Ali Sheker, said that previously the local inhabitants used to face social service problems due to the lack of suitable road transport.

Meanwhile, road repair work is underway along the Afabet-Nacfa road, according to reports. So far, 5 big and small bridges have been constructed, and 5 others are under construction, in addition to the construction of a 1 km-long support device.

Moreover, a 14 km-long road has been constructed in Nacfa town and another 30 km-long one has been renovated through the coordinated efforts of the local inhabitants and members of the Defense Force.

Eritrean and Djiboutian health experts exchange experience in malaria prevention

Mendefera, 30 October 2007 - A 6-member group of Djiboutian health experts and Eritrean health professionals exchanged experience in malaria prevention.

The Djiboutian group visited the sub-zones of Dubarwa and Mendefera, as well as the Southern region, during which briefings were given on the efforts being made to prevent the spread of malaria and raise public awareness about the disease. Dr. Tewelde Gebremeskel, head of the malaria prevention office in the Ministry of Health, accompanied the group during the visit.

The branch head of the Ministry in the Southern region on his part informed the Djiboutian health experts that although malaria had been one of the major common diseases in Eritrea, its spread has been significantly reduced thanks to vigorous efforts exerted to that end.

The head of the visiting group, who is also the head of the Djiboutian malaria control office, Ms. Munna Osman, said that the Eritrean experience in malaria provides a useful lesson to Djibouti. She also noted that the visit was both fruitful and encourages more sharing of experience.

Another member of the group, Mr. Idris Farah said that the team has taken note of the significance of assigning volunteers in rural areas in efforts to prevent malaria transmission. He further indicated that the group would work for the introduction of such a strategy in Djibouti.

Ministry of Defense Staff Office graduate 75 officers in management science

Asmara, 30 October 2007 - The Ministry of Defense Staff Office graduated 75 officers in management science who completed a 7-month course.

The course included principles of management, human resource management, office and information management, as well as related topics.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the head of the Staff Office, Col. Mekonnen Kahsai, explained that the course is in line with the Defense Ministry's efforts to develop its human resource capacity. He further indicated that the course is aimed at familiarizing staff members assigned to administration offices with modern management principles and information technology. Col. Mekonnen expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education, the Research and Documentation Center of the PFDJ, staff members of the Defense Ministry, the British Council and teachers for making due contribution to the success of the course.

A representative of the course participants, Lt. Colonel Zerai Andemariam stressed the importance of courses of this kind in the day-to-day activities of their task and commended the Ministry of Defense Staff Office for organizing the course. Brig. General Keseteberhan Gebrehiwet and other Army officers handed certificates to the graduates.

Representatives of Eritrean Communities in Australia and New Zeeland hold workshop on strengthening their respective communities

Asmara, 30 October 2007 - Representatives of the Eritrean Communities in Australia and New Zealand held a workshop from October 26 to 28 aimed at strengthening their respective communities.

Representatives of each community presented a report at the workshop on the activities of their community, in which the participants conducted discussions.

The Eritrean Ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, Dr. Andeab Gebremeskel, gave briefings to participants on current regional and international issues. He pointed out that Eritrea's foreign policy, which is pursued in line with mutual respect, could be cited as being exemplary to others as regards to promoting peace at the regional and international level.

The head of Eritrean Community Affairs in Melbourne city, Mr. Beshir Idris Nur, also gave briefings on the significance of strengthening organizational capacity.

The participants of the workshop charted an action plan for 2008 and stressed the need for stepped-up endeavors to hold the next Festival in a colorful manner.
