Mendefera

A 6-member group of Djiboutian health experts and Eritrean health professionals exchanged experience in malaria prevention.

The Djiboutian group visited the sub-zones of Dubarwa and Mendefera, as well as the Southern region, during which briefings were given on the efforts being made to prevent the spread of malaria and raise public awareness about the disease. Dr. Tewelde Gebremeskel, head of the malaria prevention office in the Ministry of Health, accompanied the group during the visit.

The branch head of the Ministry in the Southern region on his part informed the Djiboutian health experts that although malaria had been one of the major common diseases in Eritrea, its spread has been significantly reduced thanks to vigorous efforts exerted to that end.

The head of the visiting group, who is also the head of the Djiboutian malaria control office, Ms. Munna Osman, said that the Eritrean experience in malaria provides a useful lesson to Djibouti. She also noted that the visit was both fruitful and encourages more sharing of experience.

Another member of the group, Mr. Idris Farah said that the team has taken note of the significance of assigning volunteers in rural areas in efforts to prevent malaria transmission. He further indicated that the group would work for the introduction of such a strategy in Djibouti.
