Mauritius: Racing Stewards report- The susie freeman cup

Port Louis — Apprentice Yeung Ki, rider of Private Lesson, is eligible to claim an apprentice allowance of 2.5 kgs. However, it was incorrectly recorded in the race programme that he was to claim 3 kgs.

Golden Kahir and Wise Owl were slow to begin. Shuttlecock jumped awkwardly, throwing its head, then shifting ground, carrying Green Scheme onto Boozer. Blushing Moon jumped awkwardly, brushing the outside of its stall. Passing the 1300 metres Golden Kahir, when being steadied, commenced to race ungenerously, throwing its head. Shortly after this, Golden Kahir, when being steadied from the hindquarters of Golden Millenium, continued to race ungenerously.

Space Centre, which was following, steadied. At the 1300 metres Go Spook, which was over-racing, steadied from the heels of Space Centre. Leaving the 1300 metres Shuttlecock had to be restrained when awkward on the inside of Private Lesson which was shifting ground inwards. Shuttlecock then crowded Green Scheme. After consideration, apprentice Yeung Ki (Private Lesson) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was suspended from riding in the next race reserved for Mauritian riders. Shuttlecock raced wide throughout.

At the 1000 metres Golden Kahir, which was over-racing, steadied from the heels of Golden Millenium. At the 800 metres Private Lesson commenced to lay in and when straightened shifted out, inconveniencing Shuttlecock. Green Scheme, which was following, commenced to over-race and was awkward on the heels of Private Lesson. Social Guest was taken wide from the 500 metres. At the 400 metres Wise Owl, when being taken to the outside of Go Spook, bumped Boozer onto Social Guest which were then obliged to race wide.

After consideration, jockey Azie pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was suspended from riding in races for three races reserved for Mauritian riders. At the 400 metres Golden Kahir, when struck with the whip, lay in, brushing Boozer. At the 150 metres Go Spook had to be taken to the inside of Green Scheme to continue going forward when Green Scheme lay in. Space Centre lay in in the home straight. Jockey Azie, rider of first placed Wise Owl was severely reprimanded for excessive gesticulation with the whip when pulling up.

The Stewards considered an objection from jockey Joorawon, rider of the 2nd placed horse, Cash On Delivery, against Zephuros, being declared the winner, alleging interference in the final straight. It was established that over the final 150 metres Zephuros lay out, inconveniencing Cash On Delivery, which was then taken to the inside of Zephuros at the 50 metres to continue going forward.

However, after consideration of the beaten margin of 0.7 length, the Stewards could not be satisfied that the material extent of this interference exceeded the beaten margin, therefore the objection was dismissed. In relation to the incident, jockey Neisius (Zephuros) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was fined Rs.10,000. Sardonyx, Icelandic and Mudslide Slim were slow to begin. Alarming Swing hesitated at the start, losing ground. Ten Hundred jumped awkwardly and knuckled.

At the 1300 metres Legionnaire had to be steadied when awkward between Cash On Delivery and Ten Hundred which was carried in by Seeking The Gold. Ten Hundred then steadied from the heels of Seeking The Gold. Sardonyx continued to race ungenerously for some distance following this. Approaching the1000 metres Alarming Swing steadied from the heels of Sardonyx, which was racing ungenerously in front. Mudslide Slim raced wide in the middle stages.

Ten Hundred over-raced in the middle stages. Icelandic and Supreme Mission raced wide throughout. At the 800 metres Sardonyx was awkward on the hindquarters of Mudslide Slim and when being steadied, commenced to over-race. In the early part of the home straight Alarming Swing was held up when unable to obtain a clear run between Sardonyx and Legionnaire. At the 100 metres Alarming Swing had to be taken to the outside of Sardonyx to continue going forward. Approaching the winning post Alarming Swing was taken away from Seeking The Gold. The Stewards questioned jockey F. Herholdt in relation to his handling of Icelandic. He explained that from an awkward barrier he was instructed to endeavour to race as close to the rails as possible.

He explained after being a little slow to begin he attempted to shift in but was unable to obtain a position in the field in the early stages, then from the 1000 metres Supreme Mission, which was racing on his inside, commenced to over-race and shifted out on numerous occasions, obliging Icelandic to race wide for the remainder of the race. The Stewards questioned trainer C. Ramdin and jockey Naiko in relation to the handling of Ten Hundred. Mr. C. Ramdin explained that he had recently taken over the training of this gelding and that he instructed jockey Naiko to endeavour to obtain a forward position. Jockey Naiko confirmed those instructions and explained that leaving the 1300 metres after receiving some crowding from Seeking The Gold he elected to take the position behind Seeking The Gold. After this, his mount commenced to over-race.

The Stewards questioned jockey Brown and trainer B. Gujadhur in relation to the handling of Alarming Swing. Trainer Gujadhur explained he instructed Brown to jump well, to endeavour to obtain a mid-filed position, preferably 1-wide, then make his own decision when to commence to improve from any time leaving the 700 metres. He added the gelding had worked well and was considered as one of the stable main chances. Jockey Brown confirmed these instructions and explained his mount jumped awkwardly and as the field was racing tight and with runners racing wide he felt it was of the best interest of his mount as he was in last position, to remain on the rails and attempt to obtain an inside run.

However, during the race inside runs did not eventuate, on straightening he initially tried for the run inside Legionnaire, then when Legionnaire shifted in, he attempted the run between Sardonyx and Legionnaire until the 100 metres when he was forced to come to the outside of Sardonyx to continue going forward. Then after using the whip in his left hand, he pulled the whip through to his right hand but was unable to use it as he was too close to the post, then approaching the winning post as he considered Seeking The Gold was shifting in, he elected to steady and take his mount to the outside of Seeking The Gold.

After consideration, jockey Brown was charged for contravening 161 (f) for, without good cause, failing to ride Alarming Swing to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the two particulars being that over the final 100 metres he failed to ride with sufficient vigour by unnecessarily changing his whip into his right hand, then approaching the winning post he took his mount away from clear running onto the hindquarters of Seeking The Gold, in doing so being forced to unnecessarily restrain his mount. Jockey Brown pleaded not guilty to the first particular and guilty to the second particular. He was subsequently found guilty to the first particular and fined Rs.20,000.

President Bill reared at the start, losing considerable ground. Gold Guild jumped awkwardly and hung out. Marissimo was slow to begin. Salute The Star reared at the start, shifted ground, crowding Really Something onto Royal Dome. Ashton Manor jumped awkwardly, shifted ground onto Arabian Scent. At the 1200 metres Marissimo had to be steadied when awkward on the inside Salute The Star which was carried in by Ashton Manor. Jockey Rama was shown the video of the incident and told to exercise more care.

Rounding the home turn Ashton Manor and Salute The Star came together. At the 250 metres Salute The Star had to steady when unable to improve from behind Marissimo. Approaching and rounding the home turn Dane's Castle was held up when unable to improve between Marissimo and Arabian Scent. Royal Dome raced wide rounding the home turn. Leaving the 200 metres Arabian Scent was taken to the inside of Salute The Star to continue going forward.

Over the concluding stages Dane's Castle was inconvenienced when Arabian Scent shifted ground inwards. Jockey Herholdt pleaded guilty to Rule 53 A (a) for misconduct in that whilst pulling up he was unnecessarily severe on Dane's Castle. He was fined Rs.10,000. Following the disappointing performance of President Bill the Stewards were advised by stable connections that this gelding will be retired.

After being boxed Waves of Winter burst through, was quickly reigned in, inspected and passed fit to race. Catamaran hesitated at the start. Midnite Mass was slow to begin. At the 400 metres National Manner, when attempting to improve between Harry's Game and Midnite Mass, brushing Midnite Mass which became unbalanced. At the 300 metres National Manner was disappointed for a run between Harry's Game and Midnite Mass and was then taken to the inside of Harry's Game.

Midnite Mass then raced wide rounding the home turn. Telaroyal lay in over the concluding stages. The Stewards questioned trainer P. Merven and jockey Bennett in relation to the disappointing performance of Innkeeper. Trainer Merven explained he instructed jockey Bennett to jump well, obtain a forward position. He added after the race in his opinion the gelding found the distance too far, also his intention was to now freshen the gelding up. Jockey Bennett explained the gelding travelled comfortably in a forward position but did not accelerate from the home turn.

Following a report from the MTC Analyst of an irregularity found in the pre-race urine sample taken from Gold Bid, the Stewards ordered its withdrawal at 2 p.m. In view of this withdrawal, all bets on this horse were ordered to be refunded and betting with bookmakers was re-opened. Brandy-Pawnee was slow to begin. Leaving the 1300 metres Kilto rolled in crowding Optima Maximo. Jockey Brown, rider of Optima Maximo explained he enjoyed a good run in a forward position and commenced to move up from the 400 metres but when asked to accelerate from the 300 metres failed to do so and was disappointing. Brandy-Pawnee raced wide from the 300 metres. The rider of Keen To Win dropped his whip shortly after entering the home straight.

War Council was slow to begin and shortly after the start War Council and Road To Jerusalem came together. Bold Plum jumped awkwardly. Raise Your Bid jumped awkwardly, unbalancing its rider. Salt Lake City raced wide in the early stages. Raise Your Bid commenced to over-race from the 1000 metres and jockey Venkaya then elected to go forward. Bold Plum raced wide from the 300 metres. Make No Mistake was taken wide from the 300 metres. Bold Plum was taken wide rounding the home turn.

Leaving the 200 metres Kestrel had to be steadied when unable to improve between Raise Your Bid and Extreme Force. Kestrel was then held up for some distance following this when unable to obtain a clear run. Raise Your Bid lay in in the home straight. At the 50 metres Kestrel rolled in, brushing Extreme Force. Jockey Herholdt, rider of Promise Keeper, explained that he was instructed to endeavour to race in a forward position which he was able to do, then in the middle stages horses improved around his outside. After this, Promise Keeper dropped the bit and despite his urgings failed to pick up and was disappointing.

A subsequent veterinary examination of the horse revealed that it was slightly lame on the near fore leg. The Stewards questioned jockey Neisius and trainer R. Maingard in relation to the handling of Salt Lake City. Trainer Maingard explained the gelding had drawn an awkward barrier, as such he gave no real instructions to jockey Neisius but hoped that he would be able to position the gelding one horse off the fence and added that he expected the gelding to perform well.

Jockey Neisius confirmed those instructions and explained his mount jumped on level terms and after 50 metres he elected to sit quietly on his mount in an endeavour to obtain the position behind Promise Keeper. However, when Make No Mistake make ground this position became unavailable, as such was obliged to race on the outside of Promise Keeper and as Salt Lake City can over-race, he was reluctant to ask his mount to go forward. After the race he had informed trainer Maingard that he had made the wrong decision in the early stages.

After viewing the films, trainer Maingard explained that, in his opinion, jockey Neisius erred in the early stages by not putting sufficient pressure on his mount. After consideration, he was found guilty of contravening Rule 161 (f) for, without good cause, failing to ride Salt Lake City to the satisfaction of the Stewards, the particulars being that from the 1450 until 1300 metres he sat quietly on his mount making no effort to go forward and shift in when able to do so, obliging his mount to race 3-wide covering unnecessary ground until approaching the 700 metres. He was subsequently fined Rs.25,000.

This race was run in rain. Sideliner was slow to begin. Looks To Kill jumped awkwardly. Coronation Cup hesitated at the start. Bang On Time jumped awkwardly, brushing Express Mail. Express Mail raced wide in the middle stages. At the 300 metres Looks To Kill and Sunsat came together, Looks To Kill then rolled out onto Vigliodor. Matthew's Own raced wide rounding the home turn. At the 150 metres Vigliodor lay in, brushing Looks To Kill. Over the concluding stages Vigliodor rolled out, inconveniencing Matthew's Own.

Jockey Herholdt who was indisposed, was stood down and replaced on Captain by jockey Wachill. Praise Caesour, Captain, Awanago and Stephen Jones were slow to begin. New Recruit hesitated at the start. Muhta's Dancer jumped awkwardly. Approaching the 1300 metres Awanago had to check to avoid the heels of Credit Line which was shifting ground inwards. Shortly after this, Brassy Badger had to steady from the heels of Credit Line which continued to shift in.

Jockey Sooful (Credit Line) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under Rule 161 (c) and was subsequently suspended for two race meeting. At the 1250 metres Brassy Badger then shifted ground, crowding Muhta's Dancer onto Cut 'Em Up. At the 1200 metres Awanago steadied when awkward between Brassy Badger, which rolled out slightly, and National Trade, which was shifting inwards. Jockey Teeha, rider of National Trade was warned to exercise more care. At the 900 metres New Recruit, when being steadied rolled in, crowding Captain onto the hindquarters of Stephen Jones. In this incident Captain clipped the heels of Stephen Jones and stumbled.

Approaching the 700 metres Stephen Jones was awkward when close to the heels of Praise Caesour, which was over-racing. Approaching the 600 metres Blessed Arabian commenced to over-race and had to be steadied when unable to improve between Cut 'Em Up and Awanago. In that incident New Recruit, which was following, steadied. At the 300 metres Stephen Jones was held up when unable to improve between Brassy Badger and Credit Line. At the 300 metres Praise Caesour had to steady to avoid the heels of Muhta's Dancer which was giving ground in front. Shortly after this Muhta's Dancer commenced to lay in, crowding Credit Line onto Brassy Badger. In this incident Brassy Badger brushed the running rail.

Trainer B. Gujadhur, trainer of Cut 'Em Up, explained the gelding had shown some improvement since its last start and as the quality of today's field was not strong, he expected the gelding to perform well. He stated that after jumping well from barrier one, the gelding enjoyed a good run, after which it was able to win. He added that the gelding may have been assisted with the rain affected conditions. Brassy Badger returned with a laceration to its near hind tendon.

The Stewards questioned jockey Neisius and trainer Maingard in relation to the disappointing performance of Muhta's Dancer. Jockey Neisius explained the gelding was able to race in a forward position but over the concluding stages despite his urgings it failed to accelerate. He added on pulling up the gelding was not comfortable. Trainer Maingard advised that he recommended to the connections that the gelding be retired.
