The Executive Mansion has announced on Tuesday that the World Bank debt relief for Liberia was finished.
Deputy presidential press secretary Charles Nelson did not give the amount involve. But he said upon the return of Finance Minister Antoinette Sayeh from the United States, the amount and other details would be made public.
However, he said, there was still a gap in Liberia's debt with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Nelson quoted the presidential Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf as saying that, "It must be continuously emphasized that there is no quick fix in the country's fight for debt relief; it is a process and not an event."
He also said upon the return of Minister Sayeh from the United States, she would hold workshops to explain the debt issue in detail to the people of Liberia, and noted that the government of Nigeria has waived Liberia's debt with that country.
The World Bank and Nigeria are not the only ones that have waived Liberia's debt, but the governments of the United States, China, Germany, among others, have as well waived the country's debts.
