After waiting for more than three years, Mittal Steel has finally officially launched working operations in Nimba County.
The official launching of the work began in Yekepa with the side brushing of the railway. According to the County Inspector, Thomas Suah, the work began from Yekepa to the boundary between Bong and Nimba Counties.
He disclosed that Mittal Steel would pay US$60.00 per one Kilometer per person. Mr. Suah urged those involved with the side brushing to be serious with their work and cooperate with the company in a bid to boost the country's economy.
Speaking to the INQUIRER, the chief contractor of the project, Rebecca Tomah said forty men working on the side brushing activity are in each group and are equipped with cutlasses, which were distributed to them by Mittal Steel.
She said the town chief, with the consent of their community leaders, recruited the men. Mittal Steel's representative in the area, Katherine Joseph, thanked the citizens in the county and said the company will work along with the people including the local county authorities. She said side brushing work would last for two weeks.
Meanwhile the City Mayor of Sanniquellie, Mary Gonlepa has urged the citizens to stop looting the railroad and cable wires.
For the past few weeks, Mittal Steel has been renovating some housing units in Yekepa, including the staff quarter in areas E , F, and H.
