Kampala — HANZE University of Netherlands has donated Euros 2 million (about Shs5 billion) for the introduction of Information and Communication Technology training in four technical colleges in Uganda.
The four are Uganda Technical College (UTC) Bushenyi, UTC Elgon, UTC Kichwamba and UTC Lira. Kyambogo University and Makerere University will also benefit from the project.
The President of Hanze University, Mr Henk Pijlman, announced the funding in Kampala recently. The ICT training project is under the Netherlands programme for the Institutional Strengthening of Post-Secondary Education and Training Capacity (NPT).
Mr Pijlman said the project would run for four years until 2010. He said they have so far brought into the country 350 computers and delivered the equipment to the beneficiary institutions.
He said ICT training in the UTCs and the universities would enable students get ICT skills to effectively compete in the job market locally and internationally.
"The project will also help the administrators of the institutions in both the management and business support services," Mr Pijlman said.
"It will also strengthen the quality of the courses offered by the UTCs in the next five to ten years to meet the ever changing demands in the job market".
Mr Pijlman said to build capacity, 35 members of staff from the UTCs have been enrolled at Kyambogo University to pursue Bachelor's degrees in education.
He expressesd optimism that the technical support from the Dutch university to the departments of computing and information technology in the UTCs would ultimately help in setting up a one-stop-centre for ICT services in the regions where the UTCs are based.
