BUGANDA Minister for Youth and Employment Florence Bagunywa Nkalubo has asked school administrators in the region to implement the teaching of Luganda in their respective schools.

Ms Nkalubo said teaching of mother tongues to pupils is laying a firm foundation in the education sector.

"When the children are taught in a local language, it becomes easy for them to learn a second language (English) and also to easily understand other subjects," Ms Nkalubo said.

She made the remarks during her visit to Pioneer Kindergarten and Primary School, Zana in Wakiso District on Thursday.

Ms Nkalubo, who also witnessed the school donating relief items to Uganda Red Cross, added that learning the local language will help strengthen cultural values as well as the spirit of nationalism among the school going children. The school donated foodstuffs, soap, bales of cloth and beddings to help people in the flood hit areas of the eastern and in northern parts of the country.

Ms Nkalubo praised the school for implementing the teaching of Luganda in the lower classes and encourage others to emulate the example.

"Children would be able to excel much better if teachers implement this government idea. As the Buganda government we encourage schools to take up this move and we are supportive through the Luganda Literature Club by publishing books and examinations every term," she said.

Ms Nkalubo said Buganda government has set up a programme to meet teachers and instruct them on the proper handling of the language.

The school Head teacher, Ms Hanifa Bukenya said the school that currently offers 60 bursaries annually to the Kingdom promised continued support in development.

Ms Bukenya said the school would sponsor 10 children from the flood-hit areas in its consistent struggle to develop and uplift young people in the country. She added that the donation will help them greatly.
