press release
On October 2007, Mady Conde, associate managing editor of "La Nouvelle", a bi-monthly independent Conakry-based newspaper, was banned from engaging in any journalistic activity for one month by the National Communication Council (CNC), a media regulatory authority.
"La Nouvelle" was also suspended by the CNC for the same period of time.
A Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) correspondent reported that the banning of Conde and the suspension of the newspaper followed the publication of a story that appeared on page five of its 10-29 October edition titled: "National Army heading towards another mutiny", which the CNC deemed "likely to affect the honour of the Guinean army."
The story, which was not signed by it author, according to the MFWA correspondent, speculated on a probable revolt by the soldiers for "the full payment of their salary arrears."
The ban and suspension are valid until November 29.
