Sudan: South in Deal Over Audit of Its Accounts

The Southern Sudan government has signed an agreement with a leading international audit firm to examine its accounts and deliver reports for management use.

The British firm is expected to shed light on possible corruption in the administration of South, formed after a 2005 north south peace deal.

In a statement this week, the South Sudan Audit Chamber announced the formal signing of an agreement with the PKF auditing firm to audit Southern Sudan Government institutions and provide development and capacity building support to the audit chamber.

The contract is initiated by the South's Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and the South Sudan Audit chamber and the PKF.

The World Bank and Government of South Sudan are co-funding the project.

PKF is a leading international business advisory organisation.

It has a global network that reaches into over 119 countries, serviced by over 380 firms.

PKF will work closely with the South Sudan government, led by Mr Salva Kiir to prepare joint audit programmes and undertake joint audits of various government agencies accounts, said the statement.

Meanwhile, the dispute between Mr Kiir's government SPLM with its main partner in power, the National Congress Party, is no longer an ordinary issue.

Torit town in Eastern Equatorial area has witnessed in the past days spread of rumors that one Hassan Obarnu, the secretary of the organizational contact at the National Congress in The Eastern Equatorial area, has been killed in south Sudan.

The spread of the rumours about the assassination of Hassan Obarnu was based on the fact that Obarnu is one of the prominent intellectuals in the south. As one of the outstanding figures in the area, Mr Obarnu has been hosting whoever comes to his home area.

Amid the rumours, someone went to the local commissioner and warned him not to spend the night at the house of Obarnu due to issuance of instructions to liquidate Mr Obarnu.
