Burundi: Sudanese President to Arrive in Bujumbura Today

3 November 2007

Bujumbura — The Sudanese President, General El Beshir, is due to arrive in Bujumbura today. He will be visiting Burundi for three days. The Sudanese President has strong ties with CNDD-FDD. Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza has also visited Sudan.

The Sudanese government presented him with vehicle that was manufactured in their country. The Sudanese government also recently donated an Antonov 30 jet to Burundi's head of state. The Sudanese President will sign various agreements with Burundi's government.

The World Bank has expressed its concern over the acquisition of the Antonov 30 jet and, as the current finance minister states, will not disburse any funds for its maintenance.

General El Beshir is facing isolation from the international community for alleged crimes committed in Darfur where a militia he set up has been committing violence against non-Arab.

Sudan is still on the list of countries harbouring terrorist activists, including El Qaeda leaders and combatants.

Burundian troops are serving in Darfur under the African Union in order to bring peace to this troubled land.

Although this visit of El Beshir to Burundi is not applauded by many , the government has decided to interrupt the community service of this Saturday to allow Primary school pupils to welcome him, recalling the forced fanfare accompanying the visit of the Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete.
