Bujumbura

Heavy rains that hit the northern part of the capital city on 31 October killed two persons in Kamenge.

The windy rains also destroyed many houses in Kamenge, Kinama, and Mutakura communes in the outskirts of Bujumbura. This rain also hit Mutimbuzi commune where houses to accommodate returnees, schools and churches were destroyed.

Communes of northern outskirts of the city have repeatedly been hit by heavy rains leaving thousands homeless.

The current government has however failed to assist the population in dire straits. The recent assistance that was provided to the population of Kinama whose houses were destroyed by rains was only four kilograms of rice.

The ministry of solidarity had as well failed to assist more than 200 persons who have been made homeless by rains two weeks ago.

Kamenge, Kinama and Buterere are slums characterized by substandard housing. The war that has hit Burundi since 1993 has completely destroyed these areas.

The population is now trying to rebuild but the costs of building materials are prohibitive to many who have recently returned from exile and trying to start life afresh.
