Harare — The Commission running the affairs of the City of Harare has paid appreciation allowances of $8 million each to 388 workers from the health services department who did not take part in the strike between April 24 to July 31 this year.
"The commission approves the payment of a once-off appreciation allowance of $8 million to the 388 employees in the city health clinics and hospitals for continuing to work during a collective job action by the city health staff from April 24 to July 31," reads part of the latest full commission minutes.
To get the money to pay the health personnel, the commission approved a supplementary revenue estimate of $3,1 billion from the 2007 revenue estimates. The collective job action paralysed operations at the council-run health institutions forcing residents to seek medical attention from private practices. The strike also coincided with that of nurses at Government hospitals, further complicating life for Harare residents.
Most of the council clinics operated with skeleton staff and only attended to critical cases during that period.
