Kampala — A delegation of about 450 people from Uganda is expected to visit the Lords Resistance Army base in Garamba, east Democratic Republic of Congo.
The group's visit to Joseph Kony's hideout is part of the consultation aimed at building confidence in the peace process in Juba South Sudan.
"At the end of our consultation in Uganda early December, we shall have mobilised a group of about 450 people that will go to meet Joseph Kony," LRA's peace delegation leader, Martin Ojul said on Monday.
He is part of the LRA delegation that arrived in the country last week and has had several meetings with government officials including President Yoweri Museveni.
Mr Ojul said Ms Santa Okot is registering people who intend to travel to Garamba. The trip is funded by the United Nations.
He said the group would comprise two MPs from each party, members of the civil society, and religious leaders among others. "So far people I have interacted with are bitter with Kony. I have been asked all sorts of questions of alleged LRA brutality and I have told them that I'm here for consultations. Whoever wants to know more, I will take him to Kony to answer the questions," he said.
"It has been good for me to hear from their openness. I will take the true picture of their views to Kony." Talks between LRA delegates and the government have raised hopes of an end to a 20-year war in which tens of thousands have been killed and two million displaced.
