Uganda: Museveni Meets Rwandan Minister

8 November 2007

Kampala — RWANDAN Foreign Affairs Minister Charles Murigande yesterday met President Yoweri Museveni at State House, Nakasero.

A reliable source said Dr Murigande is in Kampala at the invitation of Mr Museveni.

"I have met Mr Museveni but I have nothing to declare to you now," Dr Murigande told Daily Monitor in a telephone interview yesterday.

Kenyan Vice President Moody Awori, also met the President yesterday.

Sources in Kigali say Dr Murigande's visit is linked to the ongoing dispute in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The UN refugee agency, UNHCR says 8,000 people have crossed into Uganda to escape the latest fighting in eastern Congo.

The villagers were caught in crossfire as the Congolese army moved against the forces of renegade General Laurent Nkunda and other militias.

UNHCR says more than 370,000 people have been displaced since the year began.

It is the third time in recent months that large numbers of people have fled to Uganda because of renewed fighting.

Although the escalating crisis in the volatile eastern Congo has continued to displace thousands, the Kigali establishment insists Gen. Nkunda's struggle is legitimate.

But Kampala says the renegade Congolese general is commanding a negative force in the Great Lakes region that has played a great role in destabilising the region.

Dr Murigande was also in the country to brief President Museveni on Kigali's readiness to participate in Chogm this month. Rwanda has finacially backed organising of the meeting, and has expressed interest in joining the Commonwealth.

Rwanda is a Francophone country but has many English speaking people.
