Bujumbura

The International Monetary Fund has promised to disburse U.S. dollar 80 million before the end of 2007. This was indicated in press conference that was jointly held by Paul Mathieu from the IMF and the Burundi's finance minister, Ms Clotilde Nizigama. Paul Mathieu said that the government of Burundi has succeeded in stabilizing the inflation rate.

The disbursement of these funds is still conditioned on good governance, a census of all civil servants, and speeding up the demobilization process.

The Finance minister, Ms Clotilde Nizigama, indicated that the government will increase its effort to make the retroactive payment of a 34&percnt increase in salary for civil servants possible.

She indicated that the recovery of six billion Burundian francs that are still opposing the Interpetrol Company and the government of Burundi might help to make this payment possible.

After her mission to Washington a week ago, the finance minister said that the 34 percent increase in salary for civil servants will go into effect starting January 2008 with no possibility of retroactivity.

In meetings that the Second Vice president of the Republic, Mr Gabriel Ntisezerana, has been holding with leaders of different trade unions on strike or planning to go on strike Mr. Ntisezerana promises that the retroactive payment is possible, contradicting the finance minister.
