The Police in Abuja disclosed yesterday that they are investigating allegation of gun-running against former deputy governor of Delta State, Chief Benjamin Elue following a petition over the discovery of arms and ammunition in one of the official vehicles attached to him about two years ago.
A group, Delta Youths Movement had petitioned the Acting Inspector General of Police(IGP), Mike Okiro calling for his prosecution over allegation that he was culpable of gun-running.
In a swift reaction to the petition, dated November 5 and signed by the Principal staff officer to the IGP, Austin Obaedo, the Police High Command stated that the petition is currently receiving attention at the D department.
The Delta Youths Movement in the petition dated November 5, 2007 and signed by its National Coordinator, Paul Olise stated that the former Deputy Governor who was arrested in 2004 for alleged gun-running and could not be prosecuted due to constitutional immunity should be prosecuted having lost the said immunity.
It reads, "It will be recalled that sometime on March29, 2004 the Police intercepted along the Benin-Asaba expressway, a Delta State Government-owned Peugeot 504-salon car with registration number AE 704 SKL, carrying twelve AK 47 rifles and 60 rounds of 7.62 mm lives ammunition. "The police arrested the four men in the said vehicle and immediately transferred them to the Force Headquarters in Abuja where they were interrogated".

The Police high command under the then Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun according to Olise " latter issued a statement in which it claimed the suspects had made statements to the effect that the guns found in their custody belonged to Chief Benjamin Elue who was then the deputy governor of Delta State.
