The departure for Burundi of Tanzania's team for the East African Challenge Trophy golf championship has been delayed to next week.
Team captain Shaaban Omari confirmed yesterday that the squad did not leave for Bujumbura on Wednesday by bus as earlier scheduled.
He added that the nine-member team was now expected to travel to the Burundian capital by air next Wednesday ahead of the start of the championship on the following day.
The squad comprises Omari, Hassan Kadio, Rodrick John, Geoffrey Leverian, Musa Mashamba, Sebastian Mtupili, Bryson Nyenza, Yassin Salehe and Godfrey Mtungilegwe.
The original plan was for the golfers to make stopovers in a number of towns where they were to have practiced while on their way to Bujumbura.
Tanzania will vie for the title along with defending champions Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and hosts Burundi. Kenya have won the competition six times, including four consecutive titles from 2003, while Uganda and Tanzania have each won once in 2001 and 2002, respectively.
Tanzania hosted last year's championship at the Arusha Gymkhana Club course, finishing fourth among the five countries that competed.
Meanwhile, seven Tanzanian lady golfers are in Kampala for the Uganda Ladies Open teeing off today in the Ugandan capital.
They are Betty Malaba, Shazrat Myombwe, Ayne Magombe, Angel Eaton, Hawa Wanyeche, Fatma Makame and Sophia Viggo.

Uganda Lady Golfers Union official Eva Okach said the 54-hole championship had also attracted several prominent golfers from Kenya.
