Burundi: Justice Ministry Staff Refuses to Carry Out the Minimal Service

9 November 2007

Bujumbura — The justice ministry's staff on strike decided that they will no longer carry out the minimal service. This decision was taken by their trade union after the justice minister, Ms Clotilde Niragira, decided to freeze their accounts in various banks.

They did not get their monthly salary of October as well. There has been major progress in the talks that the leaders of the justice ministry's staff trade union on strike had with the former First Vice-President of the Republic, Dr Nduwimana.

The trade union of this staff on strike indicates that Justice ministry has always rejected any moves for talks. The Confederation of Burundian trade unions (COSYBU) and the Association for the Defense of Detainees' Rights(APRODH) have supported the staff of the justice ministry.

The strike of the staff of the justice ministry save magistrates has got a negative impact on prisons. Numbers of detainees in various prisons of the country have increased while transfers and releases have been suspended as a consequence of this strike.
