Bujumbura

Members of parliament from Kirundo constituency ended their campaign today which started last Friday. The aim of the campaign was to appease the population in Busoni commune following an ethnic uprising which lead to the death of more than 8 people allegedly accused of being witches in the communes of Busoni and Ntega.

The cause of the ethnic based suspicion was the killing of Patrick Nkurunziza on 11 October. The police and the army did not intervene to rescue the victim shot dead by armed persons in uniforms. Patrick Nkurunziza was a tutsi, a former chief of the district of Gatare, who has become a trader.

The horrendous performance of the police and provincial authorities with regard to the killing of Patrick Nkurunziza deepened the suspicion. When Tutsis were fleeing to the border between Burundi and Rwanda, the governor of Kirundo was in Rwanda participating in the meeting of the Nile Basin organization. More than 50 persons have fled to the border fearing for their security.
