Although it was the debut participation in the world's biggest horticultural show held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands from October 9th-12th 2007, Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) was awarded bronze medal for emerging the second runner up for their brilliant presentation of products.

The fair, the biggest horticultural show in the world focuses on production, technology, supplies and trade/services.

The 2007 Horti Fair had 1,000 exhibitors from 51 countries, and attracted approximately 47,000 participants from 108 countries.

In an interview with the East African Business Week last week, the executive officer for TAHA, Ms Jacqueline Mkindi, said "Despite being the first visit, we stood out among the best," Mkindi said.

This great achievement is attributed to the TAHA exhibition team, led by the TAHA Secretariat and supported by a consultant from the USAID funded Tanzania Airfreight Project.

The team comprised representatives from TAHA, member growers, the Ministry of Agriculture (Plant Breeders Right), and the Tanzania Investment Center (TIC).

Other TAHA members who participated at the fair include; Tengeru Flowers, Kiliflora Ltd, Arusha Blooms, Mount Meru Flowers, Kilimanjaro Export Ltd, Natureripe Kilimanjaro Ltd, and Enterprise Solution Tanzania (EST).

She said the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) is a fast growing organization with 48 members exporting over US $ 45million per year and employing more than 10,000 people. TAHA represents the fastest growing agricultural sub-sector which plays a significant role in the country's economy.

According Mkindi, the primary objectives for attending the show was to highlight the country's quality and competitive advantage and to create confidence.

"The stand attracted reporters from Europe and East Africa who collected information and promised to promote the Tanzanian horticultural sector as a reliable destination for investment," she said.

TAHA received support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the WSSD (World Summit on Sustainable Development) Partnership Program financed by the Dutch government.

The Dutch Government through its embassy in Dar es Salaam has also been supporting the industry and TAHA in various ways through the Public Private Partnership Programs initiated in Tanzania in 2005.

TAHA has attracted membership from local and international stakeholders. Its membership varies from commercial producers to small holder farmers.
