Port Louis — The British Council continues with its efforts to train young leaders. After the now famous leadership programme for young professionals, this institution now wants to tackle students with the "Dreams + Teams" project. 40 pupils from Marcel Cabon SSS and Frank Richard SSS and six Physical Education (PE) teachers will take part in a residential training session led by Carol Hawman, a UK specialist sports teacher from 18th to 29th November.
"The idea is to set the impetus to raise an interest in sport", said the Marketing PR and Projects manager of the British Council, Yasmin Hedoo. The two local schools will be linked to two secondary schools in West Sussex in the south of England. "Through this link, students explore ideas, share experiences and are trained in sports leadership, communication skills, management skills and cross cultural awareness", she added.
After the training camp where the young people will be given basic organisational tools in addition to other training courses, the 40 young people will organise their own sports festival at Sir Gaetan Duval stadium in Rose-Hill on 28th November. This is seen as a golden opportunity for these young people to put what they will have been taught - basically the newly acquired leadership skills - during the seminar into practice.
The marketing PR and project manager of the British Council made it clear that these young leaders will be the ones to totally "develop and implement the event" for 150 primary school children who will participate in this fun activity from 10 a.m to 2 p.m on 28th November.
In addition to the organisational and leadership skills, the 40 pupils are expected to develop an awareness of the main values of sport - discipline, teambuilding capacity or giving one's all for something - to mention a few of the qualities sport can bring at the individual level.
"Dreams + Teams" is a regional project, which has been launched in other southern African countries as well. It was launched by the British Council in 2006 and this training camp is part of a broader programme. Just like the "Power in the Voice" programme that was launched to empower young people through art and poetry, "Dreams + Teams" aims at using creativity to train young people to become leaders.
