Lausanne — 49 Burundians have taken refuge in neighbouring Rwanda since 3 November, fleeing the insecurity in their country, reports Monday on its website the League for Human Rights in the Great Lakes Region (LDGL), a collective based in Kigali.
They are temporarily being lodged in the school center of Nyiragiseke, in the Kintambwe cell, in the district of Bugesera (south-eastern Rwanda), specifies the organization. According to the Rwandan local authorities, the 49 persons, all Tutsis, originate from the Gatete sector, in the commune of Busoni, in the province of Kirundo, indicates the source.
"We made the decision to flee after the shooting death, on 11 October at around 7 p.m., of our former counsellor (of the sector NDLR), Patrick Nkurunziza. (...) Soon after that crime, his little brother Nkuranga was also attacked by armed men", explained one of the refugees to the investigators of the LDGL.
This organization, whose headquarters are in Kigali, represents more than two dozen associations in Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
