The North West Premier's Youth Awards will go a long way to encourage this vibrant sector to participate in developing their communities.

"As we are commemorating the tenth year of the North West Premier's Youth awards we are going to make sure that we encourage young people to put more effort in creating businesses that will play a part in the development of their communities," Chairperson of the North West Youth Commission, Kabelo Mataboge told BuaNews.

The awards ceremony will be held on Friday in Klerksdorp.

Mr Mataboge said it was the responsibility of young people in the province to ensure that they worked together with government to fight unemployment, especially in rural communities.

"The premier and our office are still committed to ensuring the necessary support of those courageous young people who want to make a positive contribution and difference in our communities," he added.

However, he said the commission was concerned about the number of youth projects and businesses in the province that were not sustainable.

"We have registered many successes with the previous winners, but still on the same note, we are very much concerned about entries that we receive.

"There are only a few number of projects and programmes that have an element of sustainability and a certain level of development."

The Premier's Annual Youth Awards was initiated by the North West Provincial Youth Commission (NWPYC) in 1997.

Through this project, the premier recognises exceptional talent and expertise shown by young people in targeted categories.

Since its inception, the Youth Awards have grown in stature, and have attracted significant support from the private sector.

Most importantly, they have inspired young men and women of the province to do even better in their chosen field.

This year's awards will be celebrated under the theme: Renewing our pledge - A partnership to build a better life for all young people.

One of the winners of last year's awards, Welsh More of Dirang Mmogo business enterprise, said winning the award had contributed to the success of their business.

Mr More, together with the other two shareholders of the company, won an award last year in the entrepreneurship and Job creation category.

"We have employed more than 400 people in the district and the number is going to increase because our company is still growing," he said.
