During its weekly press conference on 14 November 2007, MONUC expressed satisfaction with the sentencing of Ufoyuru Agenonga and of four other militiamen, for the assassination of two of its military observers. "These verdicts constitute a real progress in the fight against impunity, although there is still a lot to be done in this domain in the democratic Republic of Congo", MONUC said.
"The military garrison court of Bunia has confirmed on November 12 last, the life sentence for war crime, of Agenonga Ufoyuru, alias Kwisha, member of the Nationalist and Integrationist Front (FNI), a militia in Ituri that, on 12 May 2003 in Mongwalu, had killed major Swafat Oran of Jordanian nationality and actively participated in the murder of captain Davis Banda, of Malawian nationality, both military observers of MONUC," the Spokesman of the mission, Kemal Saïki declared.
After being arrested and incarcerated on 29 November 2006 in Abibi, about 5 kilometers from Mongwalu, Agenonga Ufoyuru run away from jail on 19 February 2007, before the end of the first trial, during which he had been found guilty and sentenced to life in his absence, in accordance with article 8 c ii of the Statute of Rome.
With the collaboration of MONUC Civil Police in Bunia, Agenonga Ufoyuru was arrested again on 06 October last by the Congolese national police and brought before the military garrison court of Bunia where his trial was opened on 11 October 2007.
MONUC renewed its engagement to assist the government and the Congolese judicial proceedings, in accordance with its mandate, in their efforts to pursue and prosecute all persons presumed guilty of crimes, mainly war crimes, crimes against humanity or any other serious human rights violations.
MONUC reiterated its support to the Congolese institutions in their efforts to establish a real rule of law in DRC.
