Eritrea: President Isaias Holds Talks With Delegations of Libya, UN And AU

Massawa — President Isaias Afwerki received and held talks in Massawa yesterday with the delegations of Libya, the United Nations and the African Union.

In the meeting with the Libyan delegation, the President and Dr. Ali Al-Trieki, Head of African Affairs, discussed the Darfur peace process and the stage it has reached, as well as the steps that should be taken in the future.

Noting that Eritrea supports the peace process that began in the Libyan City of Sirte and that it would do what is required of her for its success, President Isaias stressed the need to continue the process even though it is complicated and might be time consuming. To this end, he underlined that the countries of the region should work together in coordination with the African Union and the UN.

Dr. Ali Al-Trieki on his part stated that Eritrea's role in the peace process had been positive and assured the President that Libya is ready to work in coordination with Eritrea and other countries of the region. The two sides also discussed the agreement reached in Libya to develop Sudanese-Chadian relations and measures that have been taken on the basis of the agreement. Assessing that the agreement was positive, both sides agreed that in order for Sudanese-Chadian relations to be normalized, the two countries need to demonstrate seriousness and cooperation.

Also in the meetings with the UN Special Envoy, Mr. Jan Eliasson, and the AU Special Envoy, Mr. Salim Ahmed Salim, both envoys briefed President Isaias on the Darfur peace process that was set in motion in the Libyan city of Sirte, and the subsequent activities undertaken by the AU and the UN, as well as the meeting in Asmara and its outcome.

The President pointed out that work under the umbrella of the African Union and the United Nations as regards the Darfur peace process is significant and underscored that unremitting endeavors need to be exerted to consummate it in close coordination with the countries of the region, and thereby attain the set goal. He further expressed Eritrea's readiness to make due contribution to this end.

Likewise, in the meeting with the Egyptian delegation, President Isaias expressed the Eritrean government's conviction that Egypt has a major role to play in the Sudanese issue and the overall issues of the region.
