Burundi: Vendors of the Central Market to Be Transferred

17 November 2007

Bujumbura — The former mayor of the city of Bujumbura decided few days ago that vendors who sell things outside the central market must be transferred to the market of Kinindo. This measure has however dissatisfied a number of those vendors who find that the market of Kinindo lacks customers for their few products.

The measure to transfer these vendors of Elias Buregure, currently the Vice-minister in charge of Public works, followed another measure that concerned people holding kiosks and business centres in public places. This measure fuelled protests and only few of the kiosks were destroyed.

The head of state has stepped in asking the managers of the central market to give more time to the vendors who for the majority have not enough incomes to rent a stand at the market of Kinindo. There is plan to manage differently markets of Bujumbura.
