Southern Africa: Delegation at SADC Ministers' Meeting

Luanda — Angolan Health and Social Welfare experts are attending, Sunday in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, the meeting of preparation of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) ministers summit on "great endemics" affecting the region, with highlight to HIV/Aids scheduled for November 22-23 this year.

According to José Van-Dúnem, who will lead the Angolan delegation that includes the deputy minister of Social Welfare, Maria da Luz, the participants will seize the forum that will go until November 21, to celebrate the SADC Malaria Day, November 9. The deputy minister stated that the meeting will also serve for a sharing, with countries of the region, some strategies being implemented by Angola in the combat of Aids and what has been doing to curb the spread of the disease.

Among the topics for discussion, stress goes to the strategy of prevention of HIV in SADC region , the action plan for universal access to prevention (2008-2010) and the strengthening of monitoring and evaluation of the regional multisectoral response. Also under analysis are the report on 2006 HIV/Aids, development of the recommendations and structure for a joint acquisition and regional production of essential drugs, including African traditional medicines.

The meeting will also discuss the participation of SADC member states in the activities on food addictives and contaminants, the structure for elimination of malaria in the region and reinforcement of the Southern Africa network. Meanwhile, a special conference on HIV/Aids will be held to review the progress scored in the region within the framework of the Maseru Declaration, approved in July 2003, during the special summit of SADC heads of State in Lesotho.

Within the framework of the region's ministers meeting, the SADC malaria day will be celebrated, under the motto "Leadership and partnership in the control of the malaria Causing vector", including the launch of the group of partners in the fight against malaria.

SADC is composed by Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, DR Congo, Tanzania, Swaziland and Malawi.
