Ethiopia: British Minister for Int'l Dev't Visits Country

British Minister for International Development Shriti Vadera is visitin Ethiopia frm 19-22 November 2007, the British embassy in Addis Ababa said .
"I am very pleased to be visiting Ethiopia at the start of Ethiopia's third millennium. This is a country with a unique and independent history which faces many development challenges," the minister said in a statement issued ahead of her visit.
"However, Ethiopia has its own well-formulated plans for meeting the challenge that the UK is fully committed to supporting," she added.
The Minister noted that she could already see the impressive results.
"There are now 14 million children in primary school -2.6 million more than 2 years ago," she observed.
The Minister also said that "the number of health extension workers has grown exponentially from 2700 in 2004/05 to 17,600 in 2006/07, which has greatly enhanced access to health services in remote rural areas." But if Ethiopia is to meet any of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), there will need to be a sustained economic growth together with substantial assistance from donors, she said..

According to the British embassy, Shriti Vadera is expected to visit a number of innovative Departments for International Development programmes and meet Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, Sufian Ahmed, Minister for Finance and Economic Development and Dr Tedros Adhanom, Minister for Health and other senior federal government officials, according to the statement from the British embassy in Addis Ababa.
She will also visit the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People's Region (SNNPR), have discussions with representatives of aid donors and civil society organizations based in Addis Ababa, and meet Professor Alfa Omar Konare, Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union.
With Konare, she will discuss on the AU's perspective on critical regional peace and security issues and reaffirm UK's commitment to the post C3leneagles partnership with Africa, according to the statement.
