Kampala — CELTEL has supplied 254 Blackberry phones to be used during the Commonwealth (CHOGM) summit. Fred Kumakech, the projects manager in charge of sales and distribution, said the model 8800 phones were also on the market.

"We are ready for CHOGM. We have supplied the Government quota and have enough stock of 8800 and 8700 model phones to suit the local market," he told a press briefing at Colline Hotel, Mukono.

The phones will be given to ministers, permanent secretaries, officials in the Inspector General of Government's office and the Chief Justice's office.

The phones cost $500 (about sh900,000). This doesn't cover Internet connection costs.

Yesse Oenga, the Celtel Uganda managing director, described the Blackberry phone as the modern laptop.

He said Celtel was the sole supplier of the phone in East Africa, adding that the number of Celtel subscribers had increased from 530,000 to the current 1.3 million.

"Our penetration rate in Uganda was about 10%. In five years, it will rise to 80%," he said.

Paul Galandi, the regional manager, said Celtel was taking advantage of the growing economy to increase its coverage. "Right now, the sky is our limit."
