The Independent Currupt Practices Commission (ICPC) yesterday said it has invited the suspended Chairman of the Nigerian Football League (NFL), Chief Oyuki Obaseki and five other principal officers of the league board to answer charges on alleged misuse of N42.5 million belonging to the football body.

A statment signed by the ICPC Head of Public Enlightenment, Mr. Mike Sowe gave the names of other principal officers as Mallam Salihu Abubakar (Executive Secretary), Alhaji Abubakar S. Garba (Accountant), Mr. Stanley Ikechukwu (Internal Auditor), Mr. Ohaide Samson Akhigbe (Secretary Tenders Board) and Alhaji Garba Shehu (Chairman Tenders Board)

"Chief Obaseki has been invited to ICPC headquarters in connection with the probe while the accountant and internal auditor have already written statements to the commission on the matter," the ICPC said. ICPC said its action was based on a petition brought before it by a member of the NFL board (name withheld) alleging that Obaseki and others were involved in financial impropriety.

It said the petitioners also alleged that the process grossly violated in all the contracts so far awarded by the Obaseki-led NFL board. According to the statement, the petitioner further alleged that NFL executive board members were engaged in spending spree in form of contract awards without allowing the audit committee make input in the deals. In one of such deals, Obaseki was alleged to have purchased an official car, a BMW series at N9m without recourse to due process and also bought another official car valued at N6.5 million for the Executive Secretary. Another charge was that the NFL Chairman purchased six KIA cars for N21 million at the rate of N3.5m each without due process. Sowe said the Commission is also looking into the alleged purchase of medical kits for football clubs valued at several thousands of Naira without the knowledge of the board.
