Jos — Governor Jonah Jang has said that the Plateau State government prior to his assumption of office in May 29, 2007 was operating 156 different bank accounts.
The governor who spoke while receiving officials of Afribank who paid him a courtesy visit said the operation of the 156 different accounts by one state government was unacceptable to him and he had to stop it to make for accountability in the handling of public funds.
Though the governor did not say how many accounts he had pruned it to, he explained that his administration had to do away with the practice, saying it did not augur well for good governance as well as probity and accountability in the public service.
Jang described the banking sector as the bedrock of any economy.
The governor who noted that Plateau required the assistance of banks to develop its economy, said it was the desire of his administration to move the state from being a mere civil service one to a more industrial and economically advanced state, adding that his government would encourage an investment culture in the people.
