Kenya: Citizens to Trade Shares Online

Nairobi — Kenyans will now be able to buy and sell shares online following the successful commissioning of the Wide Area Network at the Nairobi Stock Exchange.

UUNET chief executive, Geoffrey Shimanyula, said his firm handled the project costing Sh6.4 million.

The wide network is part of the on-going automation of the NSE, which started last year with the installation of the automated trading system. This will enable Kenyans in remote locations and diaspora to trade in shares over the internet. The network is connected to 18 registered stockbrokers.

Meanwhile, Equity Bank remained steady at Sh137 recorded at the opening of the week, to move 290,000 shares on Tuesday's trading.

The market turnover declined to Sh382 million from the previous day's Sh449 million as was the number of shares traded falling to 8.3 million shares against Monday's 16.3 million.

The NSE 20 share Index shed 3.06 points from the previous day's 9.28 settling at 5153.84. Unilever Tea and Sasini Limited moved 2,500 and 40,000 shares respectively in the agricultural sector. In the commercial sector, 1.5 million shares were traded representing 18.47 per cent of the day's activity.

Scangroup sold 67,000 shares at Sh28. Kenya Airways and CMC Holdings remained firm during the trading moving 859,000 shares and 689,000 shares respectively. Of the 3.7 million moved in the financials, KCB moved one million shares to settle at Sh28 at the close of trading.

Barclays Bank went up 50 cents to sell 996,000 shares. The sector was the busiest in the market accounting for 45.23 per cent of the volume. Bamburi Cement lost Sh7 to settle at Sh190 in the industrial and allied sector. A total of 2.9 million changed hands in the sector. Mumias Sugar swung between Sh13.20 and Sh14.50 on a volume of 1.4 million shares. East African Breweries Limited improved by Sh3 to close the day at Sh156.

There were ShSh685 million worth of bonds traded.
