Harare — Peter Majoni, famed for his 2002 hit song Usatange Imwe Hondo, which he released at the peak of the Third Chimurenga land redistribution programme, has died.
Majoni, who was 42, died last week at his Kuwadzana home after a short illness. Patron of the Zimbabwe Union of Musicians, who is also the Minister of State for Policy Implementation Cde Webster Shamu, bemoaned Majoni's death which he said had deprived the music fraternity of an accomplished and seasoned guitarist.
"On behalf of the Zimbabwe Union of Musicians, I have learnt with great shock and sadness the untimely death of veteran and revolutionary musician Peter Majoni. "His passing on has dealt a devastating blow to the music industry and his family and has left a void that will be difficult to fill," Cde Shamu said. Fellow musician Allan Chimbetu said he remembered Majoni as an experienced guitarist who played with the Marxist Brothers between 1981 and 1986. "Although I was still at school then, I remember how he associated well with my late brothers Simon and Naison during their days as the Marxist Brothers," he said. Allan also described Majoni as a patriotic musician who played at most national galas.
Majoni also worked with a number of household names such as Elias Musakwa, the late Mukoma Ketai and Papa Jose as well as Mangoma Express in his long career. Three months ago, the musician released his second album titled Unokonzeresa Iwe, Zvaita Sei? after his debut project Rangarirai. In all his works, the musician expressed a profound love for his country, while castigating those who were bent on derailing it.
At the time of his death, Majoni was working on his first gospel album, which he intended to release next month. He is survived by a 17-year-old son.
