Bujumbura — The police arrested the distributor of fake banknotes and forged documents and seals. The police seized a hundred and forty two banknotes each worth $100. The distributor is a Tanzanian called Hamisi. He lived in the slum of Buyenzi. These banknotes are forged in Nigeria and Kenya. Fake seals of the University of Burundi and driving licenses were seized as well.
The fake banknotes are made from ordinary sheets of paper and can be easily told apart from the real ones. The distributor is part of network that spreads fake banknotes. This is the second time that the police have been able to lay a hand on important sums of fake money. The national police are now working with InterPol to destroy the network of forgers of currencies.
Although the police have arrested this distributor, it is doubtful that the government will take any actions against this Tanzanian. It is still remembered that government of Burundi freed the brother of the former Second Vice-President of the Republic of Burundi, Ms Marina Barampama. He had been arrested for money forgery and was a persona non grata in this country.
