Burundi: The Remainder of the Cabinet Takes Oath

Bujumbura — Ministers and vice ministers who did not take their oaths on 16 November did so yesterday. On 16 November, only 14 ministers and 5 vice-ministers took their oaths in front of the Parliament and the Head of State.

Five ministers and 2 vice-ministers took their oaths today, including the minister of education and scientific research, Dr. Saidi Kibeya, who has repeatedly failed to settle important issues concerning students and pupils.

More than 700 students from the secondary boarding school of Cibitoke returned home after Dr. Kibeya tried to convince them in vain that they had to cohabit with FNL dissidents who had not yet been disarmed. These dissidents were using the same water and sanitation facilities as pupils.

This case underwent to a new development as the governor of Cibitoke revealed last weekend that members of the youth's wing of FNL-PALIPEHUTU at that school influenced students to return home.

The current cabinet that inspired hopes among the population is now faced with the hike of prices of food products on the domestic market as Burundian currency continues to lose its value.

The price of a kilogram of beans, the main staple in Burundi, has reached 1100 francs. In his recent address to the nation, the head of state went back on his words as he indicated that civil servants will have to wait for improvement of the state's finances before being paid the promised 34&percnt increase in salary.
