Bujumbura — The new justice minister, Mr Jean Bosco Ndikumana, has agreed with the agents of the judicial order who have been on strike for more than five weeks. These agents will return at work tomorrow.
The Justice Minister has accepted that these agents will be given their pay of the month of October. He also promised that their claims will be analysed in a cabinet meeting very soon. The pay of the month of October was the sole stumbling block that delayed the resumption of work for these agents of the Justice ministry.
The decision to block the pay for agents of the judicial order was made by the former justice minister, Clotilde Niragira who is now the current Civil service minister. The current justice minister did not promise to unblock the salaries of these agents when he took over although he accepted to check if the decision to block them followed the law. The First Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Sahinguvu Yves and his predecessor, Dr Martin Nduwimana, stepped in to broker a common ground.
Activities in the ministry of Justice slowed down following this strike. The minimal service was no longer in practice in this ministry. The strike of these agents has had tremendous consequences on jails where numbers of inmates have grown up dramatically as the releases and transfers were suspended.
