Burundi: A Standoff Between Police and Vendors Ends in a Bloody Stampede

21 November 2007

Bujumbura — Three persons were wounded in a stampede as the police were trying to stop vendors who were heading to the office of the President of the Republic. The wounded persons include a policeman, a woman and child.

It was lately indicated that one of the wounded died in the hospital.

The police surrounded the central market of Bujumbura early this morning in a bid to deny access to multitude of vendors with small capitals who sell food products in the surroundings of the central market.

The police indicated that they insured that the measures made by the government were respected. The government and the managers of the central market have remained mute over this issue. The mayorship of Bujumbura has informed vendors that they have to go the market of Kinindo.

Vendors are still reluctant to go to Kinindo on the grounds that this market offers no opportunities for them. The vendors' stands have been cleared. These vendors were occupying a place that used to serve as a parking place.

Vendors started to occupy this place, ten years due to the war that was hitting the country. Thieves were becoming rife on this market where beggars and street children are abundant.
