Zimbabwe: Rains Threaten Winter Wheat Harvest

Harare — Almost 36 percent of the winter wheat planted in Mashonaland Central is yet to be harvested as the recent summer rains threaten to ruin the crop. Agritex acting crop specialist Mr Tinomuonga Hove said out of a total of 19 500 hectares 64 percent had been harvested.

Agritex fears that the rains that began falling in most parts of the province could damage the remaining 36 percent. Mr Hove, however, said harvesting was proceeding slowly owing to a shortage of combine harvesters. He said the problem was mostly felt in Mazowe district, which is expected to account for almost half of the province's total wheat production.
