Nigeria and Niger Republic have agreed to explore the possibility of opening air links between both countries to improve trading.
This was contained in a communiqué issued yesterday in Abuja after a meeting between Commerce and Industry Minister Charles Ugwuh and Nigerien Ministers of Commerce and that of Competitiveness, Haodou Badje and Abdou Daouda respectively.
Both countries noted the need to give serious attention to the opening of air routes through private airline operators.
It advised private airline operators in Nigeria and Niger to do a market survey exploring the commercial viability of the routes.
Both countries suggested the air route should run from Niamey - Sokoto - Abuja - Lagos, to take care of the air transportation needs of their people.
They also agreed to improve road transportation and communications to facilitate economic activities between both countries.
This, they said, would further improve trading and commercial activities that would improve the living standards of the people of both countries.
In view of this, it was suggested that talks should be opened on both sides with CELTEL, to ensure access and connectivity for both countries.
On road transportation, it was affirmed that the road link between the two countries, such as Abuja-Kano-Katsina route, should be accorded priority for rehabilitation by the Nigerian government.
