Angola: Chess -Adérito Pedro Debuts At World Championship Today

24 November 2007

Luanda — Angolan International Master (IM) Adérito Pedro debuts this Saturday at the chess world championship that begins in the Russian city of Khanty-Mansiysk against the Ukrainian Grandmaster Vasily Ivanchuk, second seed in the world according in the ranking of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

The Angolan, African runner up, who has an ELO chess rating of 2,352, is theoretically inferior to his opponent who has a rate of 2,780.

In comparing, there is not doubt that Vasily Ivanchuk is superior. At the moment he has 14 points less than the world titleholder, the Indian Wiswanathan Anand (2801), whilst the Angolan representative has only won titles in Africa and had a fair participation at the olympiad.

The player of "Herinália Janete" college won his first title in juniors at the African Championship of 1993 in Nairobi city (Kenya). He attended the Karpov Chess School in Harnosand, Swedean, and won four national titles, namely in 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005.

He won the silver medal at the 9th Pan-African Games held this year in Algiers (Algeria), and another silver medal in the African Championship of the sport that also happened this year in Windhoek (Namibia), which qualified him to this world tournament.
