Cameroon: Kumba Mayor Contradicts Government Delegate

Kumba I Council Mayor, Prince Ekale Mukete, has contradicted the Government Delegate to the Kumba Urban Council, Kaven Nnoko Mbele, over the creation of Mbonge Road Motor Park.

This follows a municipal order, which Ekale signed creating a motor park at the Mbonge Road, Krammer Avenue junction.Ekale and the Company Commander for Kumba, David Bangmo, signed the municipal order, which gave powers for the park to effectively kick off on November 19.

But the Mayor's creation of the park has raised mixed feelings considering the existence of Mbonge Road Motor Park in Mile I.In July this year, Nnoko Mbele had transferred the Mbonge Road Motor Park from Krammer Avenue junction to Mile I.

He had argued that there was traffic congestion in the former park and the hygienic condition there was bad. Immediately drivers got the news of Ekale's park, they rejoiced and began loading and off-loading at the new park. Workers of Mile I Park were perplexed and kept calling on the Government Delegate for action.

When The Post visited Ekale's new park, drivers were celebrating. But there was mud and filth everywhere, with a lone dilapidated shed for cash collectors.A passenger, Ferdinand Lobe, said he only came to the Ekale-created park because there was no vehicle in Mile I to take him to his destination. He said the Krammer Junction Park is not well constructed and passengers suffer in the rainy season.

According to him, Ekale and Nnoko would have concerted before considering another park in Mbonge Road. But another driver, Paul Njuma, said they are happy to return to their father's land. He said they were like prisoners in Mile I, confined inside a fence. He begged the Mayor of Kumba I to construct a toilet and bath and improve the hygienic conditions at the park.

When The Post contacted the 1st Deputy Mayor for Kumba I, Gerald Otang Taku, he stated that there was no contradiction since Mile I Park still functions. He said the creation of the parks is just to instill competition and boost economic activities.

However, he said in the days ahead, they would construct a toilet and bathroom, build sheds and ensure proper control and discipline in the park.
