An Eritrean-Italian medical doctors association, is carrying out heart surgery on Eritrean children here.

A member of the Association, Mr. Alem Demoz, indicated that the doctors, in collaboration with German doctors' of the Hamer Forum, visit Eritrea annually to conduct heart surgery on children and that the service is free of charge. He said that the visiting Italian surgeons are lauding the prevailing peace and security in the country.

Prof. Ornella Milaniezi from Padova University, who is visiting Eritrea for the 4th time, said that the group comes here not only to carry out surgery but also to offer training to experts in the field.

Prof. Giovanni Stelin on his part noted that the group is carrying out 20 surgeries in a week and lauded the dedication of the Eritrean health professionals in this regard. Stating that heart surgery is now being carried out by Eritrean doctors, Prof. Giovanni said that the successful surgery that was carried out on November 20 by the Eritrean surgeon, Dr. Yosief Tewolde, attests to this fact.

The director of referral hospitals, Dr. Habteab Mehari, stressed the significance of surgeries of this kind by Italian and German doctors in exchanging experience with Eritrean medical experts.
