Southern Africa: SADC Parliamentarians Call for HIV Regional Committee

25 November 2007

Ondjiva — Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum officials, on Saturday in Ondjiva, Cunene Province, recommended the creation of a regional committee to tackle HIV/Aids in Angola and Namibia.

This was manifested in a ceremony that served to balance the five-day work carried out in Cunene and in the neighbouring Namibia, by the SADC parliamentarians, aimed at checking the epidemiological situation, in terms of HIV/Aids, in the mentioned places.

Speaking to the local press, the head of the SADC parliamentary team, Hélder de Albuquerque, stressed that such a measure will bring about better results in the fight against HIV/Aids, mainly at the Angola/Namibia border regions.

On his turn, Namibian parliamentarian Moses Amweelo praised the idea of creating a regional committee, adding that in so happening, this will strengthen the joint activities in the fight against the diseases that are more frequently recorded at the common border.

Meanwhile, Segundo Eduardo, vice-chairman of Cunene's Provincial Committee of Fight against Aids, said that in the first stage the regional committee will cover the northern part of Namibia and the southern region of Angola (Cunene, Kuando Kubango, Namibe and Huila provinces), therefore, this will enable the drafting of a single plan of combat against the illness.

During their stay in Cunene, the SADC parliamentarians visited the localities of Namacunde and Onepolo (in Ombadja District), where about 2,615 HIV infected people live, among them 650 orphan children.
