UK coffee importer joins ethiopia's campaign

The London-based independent coffee importer, Dr Wakefield (DRW), has joined the network of licensed distributors for Ethiopia's trademarked coffees of Sidamo, Yirgacheffee, Harar, Corporate Social Responsibility news (CRS) reported.

Dr Wakefield has already shown his willingness to be an active member of the network, reaching out to other roasters and encouraging them to sign the initiative. Wakefield's recent signing brings the number of UK Coffee roasters and distributors to eight.

Farmers developing over 20,000 hectares through irrigation

Some 110,000 farmers have been developing over 20,000 hectares of land through irrigation in 21 woredas of North Gondar Zone in Amhara State this year, the Zonal agriculture and Rural Development Department said. Crop development and prediction expert Dejene Kebede told ENA that 1.7 million quintals of cereals is expected to be harvested from the stated area.

International Group donates USD 816 mln.

The World Bank Ethiopia Country office said the international donor group has donated 816 million dollars for the execution of the Protection of Basic Service Program (PBS) in the last two years. In a statement released this week, the bank said the program, which was financed by international donor group, mainly focused on health, education, agriculture and potable water sectors.

Agency licenses 173 investment projecs

Projects investors numbering 173 from 30 countries have received licenses in just 30 days, African news reported citing the Ethiopian Investment Agency. Last September, a total of 173 investment projects were registered, with half of them being foreign ventures from 30 countries. Chinese investors are taking the lead by investing in 18 projects.

Joint venture to export salt

A joint venture of Canadian and Ethiopian nationals is to start exporting salt from Ethiopia to Ghana and other countries with an investment capital of 90 million birr. When the project is implemented, salt will join Ethiopian export items. The investment project is aimed at meeting the high demand of iodized salt in Ghana.

Sudanese businessman to invest 150 mln birr

A Sudanese investor, Mohamed Osman Mohamed Mohamoud, is to invest some 150 million birr in four projects in Ethiopia. The investor has been issued investment licenses from the Ethiopian Investment Agency to open cements, coocking oil and packing materials factories.

Union Yara sign fertilizer purchase accord

The Enderta Farmers' Cooperatives' Union and the Yara France company on Thursday signed an agreement providing for the purchase of 12,500 metric tons of DAP fertilizer at a cost of over 75 million birr. The Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported that the agreement was signed by representative of the company in Ethiopia, Dr Besrat Gebre-Egziabher and the union manager, Kidu Wolde-Selassie. The company has so far distributed 600,000 mt. tons of fertilizer among farmers and flower farms.

ERA, Sunshine sign road construction agreement

The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) and Sunshine Construction Company on Wednesday signed an agreement for the construction of the 82 km Butajira-Gubre asphalt road at a cost of 637 million birr. The construction would take three and a half years. The agreement was signed by Ziad Wolde-Gebriel, director general of ERA, and Samuel Tafesse, owner and general manager of Sunshine Construction.
